Lights Apart Rotkreuz, Switzerland / 2018
The terrace of the Apart restaurant and hotel lacked sufficient outdoor lighting for the guests to comfortably enjoy this space after sunset. The only light provided at the time were candles placed on the tables, and dim diffused light seeping out from the inside. At times the guests had to resort to using their cellphone torches to read the menu.
Three different sizes of globes are supported by a sequence of bobbing, undulating metal pipes, providing a gentle glow over the terrace and its surrounding area at night. The series of this over head lighting apparatus further defines the space by providing a sense of an upper threshold to hold down the vertical dimension. AMA provided the concept and design. Christian Deuber of Lichtprojekte supported with detailing the electrical components and the illumination, and the metal work was carried out by Kesseli Zbinden Feinwerk in Luzern.
